Nowadays, Hong Kong is known around the globe as the Gourmet Paradise. With their food and drinks that cater a fusion of Eastern and Western edge, people have opted to travel to this destination to try what the local food can offer. In the 17th Century, Hong Kong cultivated their own rice and has remained as the primary agricultural product until the mid-20th Century. In addition, during the 19th Century, oyster farming was also a thing. Fishponds also became a thing in the 1960s.

With the growth in population throughout the years, importation became a necessity to the region.

The 20th Century Food Industry

With the rise in technology comes the rise in food innovation. Sauces, preserved fruits, assorted cakes, and sodas were suddenly hip during the early 20th Century. Big food companies such as Lee Seng Heng, Man Lung, M.Y. San & Co. Inc., as well as Chung Wah, Asia prosepered during this time. This allowed people to create their dishes easier and faster. This also produced more creative culinary skills to the Hongkongers.

The shift in Hong Kong’s food culture is continually growing. With this, technology has found a way so that people can continuously be updated of the food culture even during a pandemic.
